The following provides a brief outline of some of the contracts that Emerson Moore has recently completed.
UK Projects
Client: The Church in Wales
Contract: St Johns Church, Neath – Rock Slope Stability Asessment
- EMG were contracted to undertake a rock slope stabilty assessment at St Johns Church, Neath.
- The assessment was prompted by the failure of a large sandstone block from a rock slope adjacent to the church.
- EMG used specialist rope-access contractors to devegetate the face prior to a thorough engineering geological examination including face mapping and structural data collection.
- Stability assessment was undertaken and an interpretative report prodcued detailing the findings of the study and recommendations for remedial measures.
Client: Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd
Contract: Silverstone Circuit, Northamptonshire – New Pit Lane & Paddock Development – Ground Investigation
- EMG were contracted to undertake a comprehensive ground investigation for the new pit lane & paddock development at Silverstone Race Circuit, Northamptonshire.
- Investigation methods included 7no. cable percussive boreholes to 20m below ground level, 13no. static cone penetration tests (CPTs) and 14no. trial pits. Additional In-situ testing including plate load tests were carried out at critical locations.
- Results of the investigation are being used to undertake whether a shallow raft or piled foundation is required to support the proposed structure.
Client: British Gypsum
Contract: Bantycock Quarry – Exploration Core Drilling
- EMG were contracted to complete exploration drilling programme for the expansion of Bantycock Gypsum Quarry, Newark.
- Rotary core drilling including 8no. 412 rotary cored boreholes was completed to 25m below ground level.
- Monitoring of drilling parameters with MWD system to provide detailed information on the structure of overburden and gypsum deposits.
Client: Dean & Dyball Rail/Network Rail
Contract: Cornwall - Ancient Mine Workings – Site Investigation Probe Drilling
- 7 month programme of rotary open hole drilling with compact track mounted Commachio 205 and Gemsa Gemtrack drill rigs to investigate for abandoned mine workings along the main London-Penzance railway line in Cornwall.
- In total, over 300 boreholes to a maximum of 30m below ground level were completed at 13 sites throughout Cornwall and one in South Wales.
- Drilling works were completed off the line during day time shifts and on or adjacent to the line during nightime track possessions.
- Detailed logging of arisings was undertaken by EMG geologists and drilling parameters were monitored with an MWD system.

Contract: Exeter – Site of proposed Directional Bore for Water Pipeline - Site Investigation
- Site Investigation at the site of a directional bore for water pipeline.
- 6no. 412 rotary cored boreholes to 15m below ground level.
- Scheduling of geotechnical testing.
- Detailed logging and factual reporting by EMG geologists.

Contract: Travis Perkins, Bridport – Phase 1 Geo-Environmental Assessment
- Geo-environmental desk study to establish the potential for contamination surrounding an industrial unit including advice on additional investigation.

Contract: Tottenham – Geothermal Drilling & Installation of loops
- Completion of 6no. rotary boreholes to 75m depth and installation of 32mm diameter loops for use of geothermal ground source heat pumps.
Client: La Farge
Contract: Hope Landfill, Sheffield – Installation of Gas Monitoring Wells
- EMG were contracted to drill rotary open boreholes and install 5no. gas/leachate monitoring wells to 20m below ground level in waste mass.
Client: Ground Risk Management (GRM)
Contract: Higham Ferrers – Installation of slope monitoring equipment
- Lias Clay slope with instability problems at site of industrial development, Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire.
- EMG were contracted to install a network of specialist geotechnical monitoring equipment including inclinometers and vibrating wire piezometers.
Client: Private Developer
Contract: Langley Road, Chippenham - Combined Geotechnical & Geoenvironmental Assessment
- EMG designed and implemented a combined Phase 1 & Phase 2 Geotechnical & Geoenvironmental Site Investigation at the site of a reseidential development, at a disused petrol filling station.
- On-site sampling consisted of window sampling and rotary boreholes with in-situ testing. Samples were scheduled for geoenvironemtal and geotechnical tesing by EMG.
- EMG identified significant contamination from hydrocarbons within the made ground underlying the site.
- A human-health risk assessment was undertaken and recommendations made for remedial measures.
- EMG also undertook a geotechnical assessment of the site with full recommendations made for foundation design.
Client: Castle Cement
Contract: Ketton Quarry – Exploration Drilling & Mineral Reserve Assessment
- Design and completion of three successive phases of exploration drilling comprising over 70no. rotary boreholes to over 50m below ground level.
- 412 rotary coring and open hole drilling.
- Detailed core logging and geological mapping by EMG geologists.
- Interpretation of subsurface geology by 3d modelling.
- Reserve and overburden calculations
- Geological input to quarry design and environmental impact assessment (EIA).
Client: Castle Cement
Contract: Ketton Quarry – Empingham Road Realignment – Site Investigation
- Design & implementation of site Investigation consisting of 2no. 412 rotary cored boreholes to 45m below ground level at site of proposed major highways structure.
- Scheduling and reporting on geotechnical testing.
- Detailed logging and factual reporting by EMG geologists.
- Consultancy services including guidance on embankment construction, current legislation and material properties.

Contract: Travis Perkins, Winterbourne, Bristol – Preliminary Slope Stability Assessment
- Mapping and geotechnical characterisation of rock slope in Pennant Sandstone at the site of a builders merchant yard.
- Discontinuity data collection, Kinematic analysis and interpretive reporting including recommendations on remedial measures.

Contract: Ingleton, North Yorkshire – Site Investigation at Proposed Site of Gas Pipeline
- High quality large diameter Geobore ‘S’ wireline coring to 20m below ground level in boulder clay and Carboniferous siltstones. Installation of slope monitioring equipment including extensometers and inclinometers.
- Drillers obtained excellent recovery of boulder clay and underlying laminated mudstones.
- Detailed logging of core and factual reporting.
Client: British Gypsum
Contract: Fauld Works Expansion – Wireline Exploration Drilling
- Ongoing wireline HQ rotary core drilling programme across East Midlands for Gypsum exploration.
- Max BH depth 150m below ground level, total of over 1200m drilled.
- Overburden cased off with PQ & HW sized casing to over 50m below ground level.
International Projects
Client: JSC Madneuli
Contract: Madneuli Mine, Bolsini, Georgia - Geotechnical Rock Slope Stability Assessment
- Geotechnical rock slope stability assessment of the Madnueli open pit mine in Georgia using remore photogrammetric structural data collection package, Sirovision.
- Geotechnical mapping of the mine using remote photgrammetric structural data collection package, Sirovision.
- The speed of data gathering allowed approximately 4,000 structural measurements to be made and analysed in a four week fieldwork period. The software also allowed mapping of critical structures that were otherwise inaccessible due to the instability of the slopes.
- Consultancy services included kinematic and stability assessments using rock slope modelling software DIPS, SLIDE, & S-WEDGE and recommendations for future slope profiles.
Client: Lydian Resources
Contract: Kosovo – Wireline Exploration Core Drilling
- 2,000m of HQ sized wireline coring to 300m maximum depth as part of pre-feasibility study for low-grade, bulk-mineable porphyry gold prospect.
- Contract renewed for 2008 based on productivity and quality of core provided.
Client: Alumina Partners of Jamaica (Alpart)
Contract: Tailings Dams – Dam Stability Assessment
- EMG undertook stability assessments for a complex of large tailings dams at a major bauxite refinery in Jamaica.
- The project included site walkovers followed by extensive geotechnical stability modelling from the U.K office.
- A number of dams are currently undergoing redesign as a result of the assessment.

Contract: Equatorial Guinea – Malabo Highway - Site Investigation & Earthworks Design
- Site investigation and geological interpretation for major highway structures in Equatorial Guinea.
- Geological planning and investigation for the relocation of a basalt quarry.
- Earthworks design and planning for major earthworks in tropical residual soils.

Contract: Spain - Site Investigation
- Site investigation for several highly contaminated sites in Spain
- Varied high quality investigations and sampling.
Client: Axmin Exploration
Contract: West Africa - Gold Exploration
- Rotary wireline drilling for resource establishment in CAR, Senegal and Mali
- First phase geochemical sampling and mapping in Siera Leonne
Client: Kier Construction
Contract: Jamaica - Tailings Dams - Site Investigation
- Major site investigation over two and a half years for new tailings dams at a Jamaican bauxite refinery
- Investigation methods including rotary drilling: open hole, coring and augering as well as cable percussive boring, window sampling, a range of insitu tesing and CPTs.
- In total, investigation comprised over 250 no. boreholes up to 55m deep as well as over 150 trial pits
- Equipment including drilling rigs, pumps, packers, wireline coring, CPT unit mobilised from the U.K in a 40 foot container.
