Site Investigation - An Overview

Site investigation is a vital preparatory stage to any construction project. A comprehensive site investigation following a thorough desk study will, as well as considerably reducing project risk, potentially save substantial sums on the project construction costs and program. Areas where risks are identified and savings often made include, but obviously are not limited to, the following:

  • Presence of contamination from historical land use.
  • Identification of subsidence risks from past or active mining
  • Assessment of ground conditions to optimise foundation and earthwork design
  • Identification of problematic groundwater and drainage issues Investigation of potential slope stability issues

Emerson Moore have the expertise and capability to provide a comprehensive service tailored to the particular project. Our skills cover the both the geotechnical and geo-environmental (contaminated land) aspects of projects allowing a complete solution to be delivered. In addition to the traditional methods we have several innovative techniques that can significantly increase the information available for design, while minimising the cost of the investigation. We offer all the traditional investigation techniques and are also able to provide a full service incorporating desk studies, planning and interpretation.

Desk Studies

Desk Studies form a vital but often overlooked part of the investigative process, that allows identification of potential geotechnical and geo-environmental risks, and efficient targeting and planning of the site investigation.

Site Investigation

Our experience allows us to select the most efficient and economical techniques for carrying out an intrusive investigation. We select the most applicable techniques using our own equipment and personnel and, where required, specialist sub-contractors. Where sub-contractors are used, close supervision is provided by Emerson Moore personnel, ensuring the maintenance of our high standards.

Factual Reports

Factual Reports present the data gathered during the site investigation. Emerson Moore provide all data in AGS digital format as standard, allowing contractors and consultants to manipulate and analyse the data using specialist software. In addition all reports are provided on CD-ROM in Adobe pdf format to minimise the vast amounts of paper used and reduce clients storage requirements. Where a fast turnaround is required we can arrange for preliminary logs to be emailed directly from site.

Interpretative Reports

If required our experienced engineering geologists can provide interpretation of the ground conditions encountered covering both the geotechnical and geo-environmental aspects, with regard to the proposed end use of the site, and based on both the desk study and site investigation. These reports provide an assessment of the ground risks associated with the site as well as providing recommendations including foundation solutions, retaining structures, earthworks, soakaways, slopes and geo-hazard remediation, as applicable. Reports also address the contaminated land aspects of the site with regard to the latest legislation and can provide recommendations for remediation if required.
