Site Investigation

EMG specialises in offering complete site investigation packages utilising the latest techniques to allow improved confidence in geotechnical and contaminated land solutions.

EMG believes in working in close partnership with their clients to gain maximum benefit from the high quality investigation services we provide. Using combinations of traditional methods with the latest technologies we are able to provide cost-effective investigative systems that are always tailored to specific client and site requirements.

In addition to Phase 1 and Phase 2 investigation stage works, EMG’s experienced engineers can provide the full site investigation package, from desk study to conceptual design.

Cable Percussive Site Investigation

Capabilities

Site Investigation Services offered by EMG include:

  • Specialist Rotary Drilling Services - In house fleet of rotary/percussive machines with highly experienced operatives.
  • Percussive Investigation Techniques - Window sampling, dynamic probing and cable percussive boring.
  • Specialist Non-Disturbed Sampling - Block sampling, piston sampling.
  • In-Situ Testing - Full range of in-situ testing including plate load testing, borehole shear vane, CBRs & SPTs.
  • Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) – Wireless CPT system for use with in-house rotary and percussive drill rigs.
  • Instrumentation & Monitoring - Full range of installation & monitoring capabilities for geotechnical instrumentation including vibrating wire piezometers, extensometers, inclinometers and settlement cells.
  • Trial Pitting & Hand Pits - Full capabilities for non-drilling intrusive techniques tailored to each specific site.
  • Geophysics - Surface Shear Wave (MASW), seismic reflection & refraction.
  • Factual & Interpretative Reporting - Professional service by our highly trained and experienced geologists and engineers.

Site Investigation Drilling

EMG maintains a large stock of in-house drilling equipment and are capable of providing specialist sampling sytems to suit all ground types and requirements. We ensure that only highly experienced and qualified operators are assigned to undertake drilling operations. Our in-house equipment allows for all scales of investigation from restricted access rigs to deep and large diameter rotary coring. EMG also operate a state-of-the art real-time drilling parameters monitoring (MWD) system allowing accurate depth-definition for ground features.

For more information on our in-house rotary drilling capabilities, see our drilling page.

Plate Load Testing

In-Situ Testing

EMG can provide a full range of in-situ testing for use on site investigation projects and for Construction Quality Assurance (CQA). Our range of capabilities includes plate load testing, borehole shear vane, hand vane, California Bearing Ratio tests (CBRs) & Standard Penetration Testing (SPTs). We are generally able to accomodate all in-situ testing requirements.

Cone Penetration Testing (CPT)

EMG offers an innovative form of down-hole CPT testing (‘Memocone’) allowing tests to be carried out within boreholes, combined with window sampling of the strata tested. Conventional style CPT testing using specialist CPT rigs can also be provided throuhg the use of specialist sub-contractors. Full details of our in-house Memocone CPT system are provided on our CPT page.

Trial PittingGeotechnical Instrumentation & Monitoring

EMG personnel are experienced in the installation of geotechnical instrumentation including vibrating wire piezometers, extensometers, settlement cells and inclinometers. Our services include fast-turnaround of monitoring data with a full range of in-house equipment necessary for monitoring.

Trial Pitting & Hand Pits

EMG can provide a full range of trial pitting services to suit all types and sizes of site. Pitting capabilities ranges from deep pits of up to 6m depth using large excavators through to small pits with mini-diggers on restricted access sites. Trial pitting can be offered on a stand-alone, contracting basis or integrated as part of a comprehensive investigation.

Geophysics

EMG offers a number of geophysical, non-intrusive investigatiion techniques including Surface Shear Wave (MASW) seismic reflection and refraction. Geophysical methods are ideal for tracing shallow soil & rock boundaries across site as well as identifying buried structures and groundwater. With the potential to cover large areas of the ground in short timescales, these techniques can add significant value to projects and are ideal for sites where intrusive techniques are unsuitable or prohibited.

Reporting

EMG engineers and geologists are able to provide both factual and interpretative reports ranging from basic borehole logs to full interpretative reporting for major projects. All reporting is produced in both hard copy and digital Adobe PDF format for ease of communication. All geotechnical data is available in AGS format.

Offshore Site InvestigationInternational Site Investigation Services

Our highly experienced personnel and specially tailored equipment packages allow comprehensive investigations to be carried out with equipment not normally available in developing countries. Our specialist in-situ testing equipment, including CPT and SSW can also add considerable value to investigations carried out by local companies, often at short notice.

Experience

EMG has been involved with a huge range of successful site investigation projects both internationally, and in the U.K. Project experience ranges from major, muti-rig site investigation projects comprising hundreds of boreholes to small investigations comprising just a couple of exploratory holes for residential developments.

EMG specialises in providing site investigation solutions where specialised site requirements are present. We have been involved in a large number of projects completed over water, from jack-up barges and from rail with use of specialist equipment.
